At My Age

Something I wasn't prepared for as I entered these "middle" years is how often I would hear the phrase, "at your age" or some derivative thereof.

For example, last time I went to the eye doctor for my vision exam, I was told, "at your age" it is common to need bi- or even tri-focals.

When I began putting on weight with no real change in eating habits, I read in my 'weight- management-in-your-40's' book that "at your age" metabolism slows and weight gain is common.

While reading my 'getting-rid-of-unwanted-weight-in-your-40's' book, it tells me that, "at your age" weight loss will be slow, so be happy with 1 pound a week...at the most!

Upon waking in the morning and feeling the need to move because my body aches all over from sleeping in one position too long, I remember hearing that this is somewhat normal 'at my age' .

When visiting the ER this past weekend for extreme abdominal pain, I was examined and tested for appendicitis. After all the test results and CT scan came back, the doctor proclaimed the good news was that I didn't have appendicitis, the "moderate" news was that I had a gall stone "attack" and from the looks of things, I have a sick gall bladder. Evidently this is quite common 'for my age', especially in females. He elaborated and said that "at my age" it would be good to have my gall bladder removed ASAP as there could be complications if I wait.

So, "at my age" I'm having surgery in a little over a week for something that seemingly a lot of people like me do at this age.

UGH! At my age, I still don't like these kinds of surprises.

  1. At your age, you're young and vibrant enough to play Lucy in "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown." At your age, you've got four amazing kids who have great friends and are passionate about seeking Christ.

At your age, you've got sassy friends who love you just the way you are...gall stones and all!!!

I've heard the "at your age" thing a few times myself. Oh how frustrating it can be. Hang in there, sister. We'll be praying the surgery and recovery are smooth sailing!

  2. Yes, I'd have to say there are lots of things I'm thankful for "at my age"--
--having the joy of being Lucy,
--having the stamina and getting into better shape during that show,
--having wonderful "sassy" friends who love me!

I'm also thankful for good paing killers!

  3. Okay, that would be "pain" killers---and no, I didn't write this while under the influence of said painkillers.

  4. Sorry to hear about you needing gall bladder surgery. Praying that it goes well next week. The rest of what you said about "at your age" sounds all too familiar...oh happy late 40's!

  5. Doesn't Oprah say that the 50's are the best? Perhaps 40's are the set up for the fun and fabulous 50's. Nah, every age is a blessing. It's all in the perspective, right?

I'm sorry to hear you need surgery. Seriously, what is the point of a gall bladder if they can just remove it at will? Sheesh, do we really need extra parts? Hey, maybe this will take care of that pound you were supposed to lose this week. Again, it's all about perspective! (I'm hoping this is funny since you're on good drugs. If you're not on the good ones yet, maybe you should re-read this once you are.)

  6. Amen to having spare parts! I'll admit I was praying while in the ER that nothing REALLY serious was wrong. I'm thankful for being all too average in the need to have my gall bladder removed!

You're right--perspective--that's what it is all about! Life is good...this is just a bump in the road...and supposedly I'll fell better!! Yeah!

    Oh...and I'll be a pound less!

    Woohoo!
